I will start with the exciting news first. Thursday 21st November is our Black History Day! And our focus group for the event is not just students but EVERYONE! Yaaaay! All-day, we will be having a mini-exhibition at the Common Room, Falmer House, University of Sussex (of course). We will REALLY REALLY appreciate it if you can dress in any cultural/national attire. Let us make our Sussex campus BLACK by being very cultural, whether dressing in African, Asian, Caribbean (etc) or any particular attire that showcases our diversity and beauty. So, drop in all day at the Common Room for fun, a drink or general chat on Black History in Sussex or beyond.

If you would like to see a certain picture or event aspect featured, send an email to our curator at blackhistory@sussexstudent.com.

From 5pm onwards, join us for an evening celebrating all things Black History Month at Sussex and beyond. Networking, reflection and celebration alongside a fascinating exhibition from Brighton & Hove Black History. Cultural dress highly encouraged! (We cannot emphasize that enough!)

Announced at Sussex Black History Day will be the winner of our Black History Month competition!

To enter, follow @sussexbhm and Black History Month Curator, Su’ur/Su’eddie (@sueddieagema) on Instagram and Twitter. Send us a photo of you that you’re happy to be reshared with your response to “What it means to me to be Black/African/Other” (either generally or relating to University of Sussex life). You could win a £25 Love to Shop voucher if one of our favorite entries – announced and showcased on the night.

Come, let us destress, have fun, celebrate ourselves, Black History and over all, be jolly!

Again, the date is Thursday 21st November, 2019. Dress cultural all day, drop by at the Common Room any time, all day but MOST IMPORTANTLY, come for the fun part from 5pm for the fun part! Good music, nibbles, networking and everything beautiful.

It doesn’t matter if you are a staff, student, Brightonian or visitor, if you are in town on Thursday 21st November, 2019! All day for our exhibition, and in the evening, from 5pm. We ask that you kindly share this among your network and in whatever area you are, help us to paint Sussex black on the day.

Asante! (Thank you)
